How can it compress a video without uploading it?
Modern browsers ship a video engine called WebCodecs that talks directly to the hardware encoder in your computer or phone. myownvid uses it to decode and re-encode the file on your device. The page is just a static website; there is no server that ever sees your video.
Will the quality drop?
Compression works by lowering the bitrate, so some detail is always traded for a smaller file. The Balanced quality level is hard to tell apart from the original for most footage. In target size mode the tool calculates the bitrate that fits your limit and, if that would look bad at full resolution, steps the resolution down instead.
Is there a file size or length limit?
myownvid does not impose one. The practical limit is your device: the finished file is assembled in memory, so multi-gigabyte videos can fail on phones or low-memory laptops. Videos up to a couple of gigabytes are fine on a typical desktop.
Which formats can I compress?
MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV and MPEG-TS inputs with H.264, HEVC, VP8, VP9 or AV1 video. The output is MP4 with H.264 by default, which plays everywhere, or WebM with VP9 if you prefer.
How do I compress a video for Discord?
Choose the Discord preset. Discord allows 20 MB uploads for free accounts, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and 500 MB with Nitro. The tool aims slightly under the limit and re-checks the finished size so the upload goes through.
Why is my result a little bigger or smaller than the target?
Hardware encoders hit an average bitrate rather than an exact one. The tool leaves a safety margin and, if the first pass overshoots, runs a refinement pass automatically. If it is still above your limit, lower the resolution cap or the target by a megabyte.
